Georgia Athletes Clay Doub and Tony Singleton Take Home More Gold
Medals from National Competition
Two Special Olympics
Georgia Athletes win gold medals as the National Games competition
wrapped up in Ames, Iowa Friday.
-Clay Doub won the gold
in the 25 yard breast stroke.
-Tony Singleton won four
gold medals in squat lift, dead lift, bench press and combination
competition.
Thursday:
The Georgia team won the
GOLD medal Thursday in the swimming relay competition. Congrats
athletes! Two athletes won gold medals in individual competitions.
In individual
competition, the following athletes won medals:
-Patrick Bonorato won
second place in the 50 meter freestyle race and third place in the
100 meter freestyle race;
- Bradley Carlisle won
third place in the 50 meter freestyle race;
- Ankur Chandan won
third place in the 50 meter freestyle race
- Melissa Ann Rascoe won
second place in the 100 meter freestyle race; and
- Ryan Tyler Shadrix won
first place in the 200 meter freestyle race and third place in the
400 meter freestyle race.
- Dion Thomas won first
place in bench press, dead lift and combination lifts and second
place in male squat lift.
- Rod Smith won second
place in the long jump.
- Matt Pakchar won fifth
place in the 1,500 meter run.
Notes
from the games:
Powerlifter Dion Thomas,
of Peach County, recorded his personal best lift in all three
lifts -- bench press, dead lift and squat lift. Tonight, the team
is off to the dance at Memorial Union at Iowa State University.
Wednesday:
Special Olympics Georgia
athletes racked up the following medals:
- Rod Smith won first
place in the 400 meter race and
- Aaron Jones won third
place in the 200 meter race and fifth place in the 400 meter race.
- Patrice Lockhart won
first place in female dead lift, female bench press and female
combination lifts and second place in squat life.

Congratulations to the four bowlers winning in competition
Tuesday! Here are the following winners:
- Victor Fair, of Cobb
County, fifth place;
- Dwayne Evans, of
Coweta County, third place;
-Kristen Blay, of Bibb
County, third place;
- Phillip Geoffrion, of
Coweta County, second place.
Notes
from the games:
All the athletes enjoyed
the National Games Opening Ceremony. They saw fellow Georgian
athlete and World Games champion Bryan Ruff make a presentation at
the national ceremony. Matt Pakchar, of Bibb County, braved the 10
K race when he was ill and did not finish the race. He won a
participant ribbon. Last weekend, about 30 parents and coaches
cheered on as athletes boarded four Cessna planes at the DeKalb-Peachtree
Airport. The last group to leave took the Wildcat plane, the
fastest plane of its kind to Ames. Before boarding the plane,
Special Olympics families and staff were allowed to check out the
plane and take pictures.

About National Games:
Ames, Iowa welcomes the first ever
Special Olympics USA National Games. In July, 2006, Ames will be
transformed into an Olympic Village to host 3,500 athletes, 2,000
coaches and delegates, 12,000 family members and friends, 8,000
volunteers, and 30,000 spectators. This event promises to
highlight thrilling athletic competition, exciting live
entertainment, and provide experiences that will generate lifetime
memories.
Team Georgia
is made up of 18 athletes
and 5 coaches. These athletes will be participating in Aquatics,
Athletics, Bowling, and Powerlifting.
