   VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Volunteer of the Month -

Betty Green

For our volunteer of the month, Special Olympics Georgia looks for someone who stands out with their commitment, enthusiasm and goes above and beyond their call of duty. And for her dedication at the 2007 Indoor Winter Games, Betty Green certainly fills those obligations.

Betty dedicates her leisure time coaching and helping to take care of two athletes at their home.  Her passion is to help the athletes of the Special Olympics.

When tragedy struck the athletes and coaches in Albany and almost caused them to miss out on the Winter Games, Betty stepped up and took over the reins of leader for the Albany athletes and coaches.

Not only did she coach but she also had to learn complicated details about the process of submitting paperwork for the athletes, so the athletes could compete.  It was her mission to make sure that every  piece was in place for her athletes, working long days and nights up until the Winter Games.

The trip to the games turned out to be a huge success! The athletes were very happy and said that as long as Betty was helping, organizing and coaching they would always come to the games. Betty and the athletes already had a special bond, but after Winter Games,  it's a lifelong friendship.

In addition to the games, Green and the athletes also got a chance to ride in style. Betty’s daughter and student at Albany Sate University, arranged for them to be transported on one of the universities new charter buses. The athletes loved it and were very thankful.

Thank you Betty Green for your commitment and dedication to the athletes! Your passion and enthusiasm is what makes the Special Olympics Georgia mission a success.
