Sponsor of the month

For the second of three years, the State Masters Bowling Tournament will be held in Savannah from July 18 – 20. We are so grateful for the community's support of our athletes and want to recognize each organization who with each contribution, shares in the joy that is Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA). Our Presenting Sponsor for the weekend is Macy’s – who continues to impress and provide unparallel support to SOGA throughout the State.

Carroll & Carroll, Inc. is one of our official sponsors. (At last year’s 2007 Distinguished Service Awards Mr. Arland Carroll won the Outstanding Grassroots Support from a Business on the Local or Area Level.) J. T. Turner Construction Company, Inc. also joins us for the second of three years as a sponsor. Kroger & Quiktrip are providing meals for our athletes throughout the weekend, as athletes are not charged for meals throughout the entire weekend.

The underlying philosophy and commitment to our athletes that these companies show  when they provide sponsorship funds and volunteers to support our athletes is truly incredible. We hope that you will take the opportunity to thank these companies. Thank you to these sponsors, the volunteers that will allow Games to be a success, and countless others who enable our athletes to achieve endless possibilities.

   VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Volunteers of the Month -  Van and Christy Cochran

Van and Christy Cochran volunteered for one of Special Olympics Georgia's most unique and challenging events, Bicycle Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) this year. BRAG is a week long event featuring about 1,700 cyclists, including 17 members of Team SOGA, biking all the way from Oxford to St. Simons Island. Each day on the ride, SOGA sets up about four to five rest stops along the route for the riders to rest, eat and drink. Van and Christy both volunteered each day at the lunch rest stops. Each day, they came out in what felt like 95 - 100 degree weather, to help SOGA run these stops. They were out very early each morning  to help set up the stops, cut up fruit, make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, stir Powerade and help us clean up.  Van and Christy kept everything running smoothly and efficiently.

This was Van's second year volunteering for BRAG and Christy's first year. They came to support their son, Jeramey, who rides on BRAG. While Jeramey is biking, they worked for about five hours each day. Last year, Van noticed that some improvements needed to be made and this year he brought out his own bowls, fan and tent to spruce up his rest stop.

Thanks Van and Christy for all of your hard work and dedication to Special Olympics Georgia and BRAG. We look forward to next year

Congratulations to you both on being the July Volunteers of the Month.
