FEBRUARY 2006

The Duck Derby is coming to Atlanta!

The concept is simple. 20,000 rubber ducks are adopted by individuals, dumped into the lake at Atlantic Station, and then raced for prizes - and even a chance to win

$1 Million!

You can adopt your very own Derby Duck for just $5 each, or get a "Quack Pack" complete with your own souvenir junior duck, and vouchers from some of our sponsors. Funds raised from the duck adoptions will benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Georgia.

Volunteer of the Month -  Amanda  Hughes

Special Olympics Georgia would like to recognize the efforts of February’s Volunteer of the Month, a lady who for years has dedicated her time, energy and warmth to ensure Special Olympics athletes have the opportunity to compete. Amanda Hughes, or Mandy, is an education teacher who has been involved with SOGA for the past four years. She has incorporated SOGA’s “So Get Into It” program into her classroom curriculum.

In recent months, Mandy has single-handedly put together Monroe County’s first Unified Floor Hockey team! 2006 was Monroe County’s first trip to the Special Olympics Georgia State Indoor Winter Games, and Mandy had to overcome many obstacles. With the daunting prospect of having to cover equipment and start-up costs, she immersed herself into the task of raising the necessary funds. When securing a bus driver became an obstacle, Mandy said “no problem”, and decided to get her bus driver’s license and drive the athletes to Marietta herself! Often, difficult circumstances can make even the most hardened volunteer waver, but Mandy refused to allow anything to come between Monroe County athletes and their goal of competing in the 2006 State Indoor Winter Games.

We recognize and celebrate Mandy with this honor. Thanks for the countless hours and continuous support. With your high standard of leadership, Monroe County athletes will continue to learn how to conquer their obstacles. You are a priceless addition to Special Olympics in Monroe County. Congratulations Mandy!
