Race for Champions

Attention runners: it's almost time for a nice
trip around the lake. Special Olympics Georgia
hosts the sixth annual Race for Champions
Saturday, May 27 at Lullwater Park at Emory
University. Prizes will be awarded for the
overall men’s, women’s and age-group winners.
Adults register for $15 before Tuesday, May 23
and after for $20. Children ages 12 and under
may register for $10 before May 23 and $15
after. To register for the race, go to
www.active.com and search for “Race for
Champions” or go to
www.specialolympicsga.org, go to the event
calendar, find the race on May 27 and click on
the link to download a registration form.
Registration is from 6:30-7:30 a.m. at Druid
Hills High School. The 5K race begins at 7:30
a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 8:30 a.m. Call

Be a fan at the Special Olympics Summer Games
Come cheer on Special Olympics Georgia
athletes June 2-4 at Emory University.
More than 2,000 Special Olympic athletes from
around the state will compete in aquatics
athletics, soccer, badminton, volleyball,
tennis, gymnastics and table tennis. All
events are free. The opening ceremony is at 8
p.m. at McDonough Field. Saturday, Olympic
Town will offer food, games, and clowns from 9
a.m. until 5 p.m. at McDonough Field.
Spectators may park at Peavine Parking Deck.
Buses and vans may be parked at Turman
Residence Hall and Woodruff Residence Hall’s
parking lot throughout the day.
“Art Extravaganza” Art Exhibit & Auction
More than 200 pieces of art will be up for
bidding at the Art Extravaganza” Art Exhibit &
Auction Saturday, May 20. Items, presented by
Regency Fine Art, may be previewed at 7 p.m.
before the auction begins at 8 p.m. The
evening will also food, bring music, and door
prizes. The auction will be held at a home
listed at multimillion dollar home in Buckhead
at 4350 Harris Valley Road. The art will
include originals, numbered prints by local
and nationally known artists. One ticket is
$30 and two are $50. For tickets and to RSVP

Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA) and Georgia
Association of Educators Partnership
SOGA and Georgia Association of Educators
recently signed a letter of agreement that
will promote each other's organizations. The
agreement includes promotions at school-based
meetings and conferences and linkage to each
other's Web sites. GAE's educational trade
magazine, "KNOW" will feature two Special
Olympics stories. Angie McCormick, GAE staff
member and editor of the magazine has been
instrumental in this partnership. For more

Volunteer of
the Month
Yvette Adams
Yvette
Adams, adaptive physical education teacher in
Paulding County, puts her heart and soul into
making sure Special Olympics is everything the
eligible athletes of Paulding County could
dream of. Her dedication and leadership skills
go above and beyond. Yvette does everything
within her power, including the supervision of
medicals and constant reminders, to ensure the
participation of Special Olympians.
She
serves on Paulding County’s Local Management
Team and is known as an organizational queen.
Yvette has spent her time and energy planning
events and training others to lead. She sets
the standard high and truly cares about each
athlete.
Special Olympics Georgia currently serves
22,742 athletes with intellectual
disabilities! However, the number of athletes
serviced by Special Olympics Georgia is only
23% of the eligible athletes in the state.
Yvette
Adams is recognized as the Special Olympics
Georgia Volunteer of the Month for May 2006
because she not only enriches the lives of
current athletes, she strives to reach out to
those not involved. Congratulations Yvette; we
appreciate you!

Jake's
Ice Cream Tasting:
May 6
Grab a
scoop of the official Special Olympics Georgia
ice cream flavor at Jake’s Ice Cream & Sorbets
at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at 515 North McDonough
St. in downtown Decatur. Local celebrity judges
will select a winning flavor out of five
finalists. The flavor will be offered at Jake’s
through the summer and proceeds from the sale of
the ice cream will benefit Special Olympics
Georgia.
Jake's will be involved with the Special
Olympics State Summer Games, where participants
will receive coupons for ice cream and other
treats. During the summer, Special Olympics
will be participating in Jake's Scoop for a
Cause Program. They will help Jake's run the
ice cream parlor for the day and Jake's will
donate a portion of the sales back to the
organization.
Bicycle
Ride Across Georgia
Saturday, June 10 - Saturday, June 17
Begins
in Dalton, GA and ends in Augusta,
GA
Special
Olympics Georgia is partnering with Bicycle
Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) to staff rest stops
and to participate in a beautiful cycling ride
across the state of Georgia. We will begin in
Dalton, Georgia on Saturday, June 10 and ride
to Augusta, Georgia by Saturday, June 17. This
is not a race; BRAG is a family – oriented
ride meant to provide enjoyment and
excitement. Athletes and their coaches of
Special Olympics Georgia can ride free.Volunteers
and cheerleaders will be needed along the

Law Enforcement Torch Run
Special Olympics
Georgia's Law Enforcement Run is starting this
month. The
run
involves more than 1,500 law enforcement
officers from more than 150 agencies who take
part in a 1,000 mile, two week torch relay to
pass the Special Olympics Georgia "Flame of
Hope" across the state. The nine relays
converge at Emory University during the State
Summer Games Opening Ceremony.
The Torch Run culminates at the State Summer
Games as officers enter the Opening Ceremony
with the Olympic Torch - the Flame of Hope.
The Torch is passed to a Special Olympics
athlete who lights the Olympic cauldron
signifying "Let the games begin!"
