VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH |

Volunteer of the Month -
Jonathan Spillman
Special Olympics Georgia recognizes Jonathan Spillman as the
August 2006 Volunteer of the Month. Jonathan volunteers in many capacities with
Special Olympics Georgia, including the Special Olympics Young Leaders program
and as the 2006 Duck Derby mascot, "Jonathan the Duck."
The first Special Olympics Georgia Duck Derby was held on Saturday, April 29 at
Atlantic Station in Atlanta. The concept was simple: dump 20,000 yellow rubber
ducks into the lake at Atlantic Station and race them. Jonathan volunteered to
sit on the committee for this event. From selling ducks to securing raffle
prizes, Jonathan went above and beyond to make this event a success. He was a
great source of encouragement and excitement to the staff and other “duck”
volunteers. What was the one thing that allowed Jonathan to stand out? He simply
said, “Yes”.
From that moment on, Jonathan Spillman was known as “Jonathan the Duck”. He
agreed to wear the hot, large and extremely yellow duck costume. Whether we were
promoting the Duck Derby at the Atlantic Station Press Conference, selling ducks
or actually dumping the ducks in the water, “Jonathan the Duck” ensured
EVERYONE, from volunteer to spectator was having a great time.
If you happen to see “Jonathan the Duck”, make sure you ask him to do the
electric slide for you! Thanks Jonathan for the time and effort you pour into
Special Olympics Georgia. We appreciate you and congratulate you as the August
2006 Volunteer of the Month.
Do you know someone who should be Volunteer of the Month? Simply send the person's contact information (name, email address, mailing address, and phone number) and a brief paragraph explaining why you think they should win to:
