Volunteer of the Month -
Phil Martin

Phil
Martin, pictured right, worked with athletes at the Open Sailing Regatta
Competition. Next to Phil is Nandi Issac of Macon.
To be selected as Volunteer of the
Month for Special Olympics Georgia, volunteers must be passionate about the
program and the athletes. Phil Martin is passionate. Phil has taken his
passion for sailing and Special Olympics and has combined them to provide a
spectacular experience for hundreds of athletes.
Because of Phil’s time and efforts in volunteering for Special Olympics
Georgia’s sailing program, we have been able to add a sixth state event. Special
Olympics programs, state-wide, will gather their skippers and crews to compete
each fall in Special Olympics Georgia’s State Open Sailing Regatta Competition
in Macon, Georgia. Phil has not only been instrumental in helping collect
and maintain a fleet of boats for Special Olympics athletes, he has the amazing
ability to connect with each athlete. Just ask the athletes about “Sailing
Fridays”!
Nandi Issac was afraid of sailing. She would have never dared to sail, except
for her trust of Phil. Under Phil’s guidance and coaching, Nandi and her unified
partner Ashley have now advanced to become Gold Medal members of the Georgia
Sailing Team! Nandi’s face glows as she speaks of her delight in learning how to
steer (or in Nandi’s words “drive”) a sailboat. She remarks, “Phil Martin has
changed the lives of me and my friends. He is a true talented coach. These years
he has been a true blessing among us . . .” Congratulations to Phil Martin in
receiving Special Olympics Georgia’s Volunteer of the Month award for November
2006.
Special Olympics Georgia congratulates
Phil on being October's Volunteer of the Month!
