World Games Shanghai 2007

Meet the Athletes

 Jena Springer

Springer, of Gwinnett County, will participate in the 200 and 400 meter races in China. She is 19 and attends South Gwinnett High School in Snellville. She is a member of the Cross Country Track Team where she received a varsity letter her sophomore and junior years. She enjoys horseback riding and surfing. Jena says Special Olympics has built up her confidence and has made her feel included and has challenged her to play harder.

 

Sammy Lewis

Lewis, of the Kay Center in Fort Valley, will participate in the 100 and 400 meter races, shot put, running long jump and high jump competitions. Lewis works at the Kay Center and Farmers Furniture. After being involved with Special Olympics during the last four years, he said his health and self-esteem have improved. He was named the 2007 Male Athlete of Year July 28 at SOGA's Distinguished Service Awards Banquet. He also attended the Pre-World Games Invitational in China in 2006.

 

Wanda Jones

Jones, of the Kay Center in Fort Valley, will participate in singles and doubles bocce. Jones attends and works at the Kay Center. During the last two years of  participating in Special Olympics, Jones said, she's learned new skills, met new friends and has better self esteem. She says she's most proud of herself for learning to control her attitude and work with others.

 

Scott Sieg

Sieg, of Muscogee Sports in Columbus, will bowl in singles, doubles and team competitions in China. Sieg also competes in bowling, bocce, aquatics and rollerskating and has competed for the last 24 years. He is also an Eagle Scout. He says that Special Olympics gives him his drive to do his best. He says he will work hard to be a better bowler and help TEAM USA bring home medals.

 

Patrice Lockhart

Lockhart, of the Kay Center in Fort Valley, has been involved with Special Olympics over the last five years. Lockhart was the 2004 Female Athlete of the Year and lives independently. She said attending World Games means she gets to travel and see new places and meet new friends.
