Over the last 40 years, Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA)
has grown in the movement for people with intellectual disabilities from one  track and field competition at an Atlanta college to five state games and 23,078 athletes. Help us wrap-up Special Olympics Georgia’s 40th year by purchasing a virtual brick  on SOGA’s Web site for a holiday gift or to recognize someone or  for yourself. More than 2,000 athletes, coaches and unified partners are expected compete at Indoor Winter State Games at various locations inCobb County Jan. 21.23. New this year is three-on-three basketball and the return of ice skating. For more information about Winter Games, click here.

Meet your team: Six athletes selected to represent Georgia at World Games in Athens, Greece  

Team Georgia, comprised of six athletes and six coaches, will compete at World Summer Games June 24-July 5.
Athletes will go to training camp March 28-April 1 in San Diego. See individual athlete photos to the right. 

 The approximate cost for each athlete to attend World Games is $7,000. This includes the expenses associated with air travel, hotel stays, meals, training camps, equipment, transportation, passport fees, uniforms, and general wear clothing. Special Olympics Georgia does not charge the athletes to participate, and your willingness and generosity to support the Team USA Georgia athletes will give them the chance to make their dreams come true. 2010 Law Enforcement Torch Run – Emerald Program Internationally  

More than 85 agencies participated in the 2009/2010 Law Enforcement Torch Run season and made another amazing impact on our program. This year, these officers raised $650,154 through the Torch Run – from hosting the Polar Plunge, to sitting on top of Krispy Kreme Doughnut Shops, treadmill walks, golf, bowling, softball tournaments, merchandise sales, to motorcycle rides.
New this year, the Torch Run program hosted the first ever Polar Plunge at Lake Lanier Islands Beach & Water Park in February. Taking the plunge was 175 warm hearted supporters who  raised More than $52,000 for the first time event.Cops on Doughnut Shops  saw another amazing record  – with more than $96,000 total raised statewide! Officers worked hard throughout the rain and heat  inside and outside of the Krispy Kremes stores. In October during the International Law Enforcement Torch Run Conference hosted in Long Beach, California, the Georgia program was awarded the Emerald award for excellence and is the 16th largest Torch Run fundraising program in the United States! 
Congratulations to our new Top 5 Departments, raising more than $159,000! These departments have the honor of bringing in the torch during the State Fall, Winter, and Summer Games.

National Games Athletes Bring Home Medals    

Eighteen Special Olympics 2010 USA National Games athletes competed in Lincoln, Nebraska July 17-24. Athletes competed along side 3,000 other athletes at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

SOGA in Your Community

 Skippers Sail for 11th year for Athletes
The 11th Annual Open Sailing Regatta, Sail for Champions, presented by the Southern SailingClub (SSC) to benefit Special Olympics Georgia was held the weekend of September 10 – 12 at the beautiful Sunrise Cove Marina on Lake Lanier. Despite the fewer number of skippers registering their sailing vessels, the 2010 Open Sailing Regatta weekend was tons of fun for all who participated! With the help of the sailing community of Lake Lanier, the event raised more than $21,000 for the athletes!  

Golfing in honor of Bob Busse
SOGA hosted the 15th Annual Bob Busse Golf Classic on Monday, Oct. 11 at Laurel Springs Golf Club. More than 100 golfers gathered for a great day of golf with perfect weather. This year’s event helped raise more than  $71,000 for Georgia’s athletes.

The 2nd Annual Titletown Tasting held in Valdosta is becoming a favoriteevent for the local community. More than 100 SOGA supporters attended the evening fundraiser August 14 at Covington’s Restaurant. Guest dined on delicious food, had 40 items to bid on in the Silent Auction, and enjoyed great music from the Tim Miller Band. Titletown Tasting raised more than
$9,000! Thank you, Valdosta community – we can’t wait until next year’s event!  

Gwinnett County’s new bocce event
The Gwinnett County Schools hosted their first annual Boccefest Oct. 16  at Bunten Park in Duluth. Teams from Gwinnett County Schools, Gwinnett Masters, Just People, Dij’s Metro Soar and Fort Valley competed for five hours as the teams prepared for State Fall Games. Special Thanks to Frito Lay for serving as the sponsor. Frito Lay gave away snacks and served as volunteers throughout the day.

Classic Cadillac of Atlanta is giving back to the community in a unique way by dedicating the entire month of December to Special Olympics Georgia. Classic Cadillac customers will have the opportunity to aide in efforts to raise money and awareness
of Special Olympics. “Special Olympics Month” at Classic Cadillac will be all of December where Classic Cadillac will match each donation a customer makes directly to Special Olympics Georgia dollar-for-dollar! Classic Cadillac will be accepting donations in transaction of dealership services from Dec. 1-31. Don’t have a Cadillac but want to support the cause? Well, throughout the month of December, Classic Cadillac is offering oil changes on any car make and model. Donations will be accepted at the Classic Cadillac dealership on 7700 Roswell Rd. They will match donations “dollar-for-dollar” for up to $100, and the grand total of funds raised will be revealed during a check presentation at an upcoming event for Special Olympics Georgia. 

Ladies: Dec. 2 is the night out for you to benefit Jim Mora Foundation 
Enjoy a Ladies Night Out with TV personality Holly Firfer  Dec. 2 at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth. The event, from 7 to 11 p.m., will raise money for the Jim Mora Count On Me Foundation, which supports children in need. Click here  to register and for more information.
