Athlete Spotlight: Andre JohnsonAndre Johnson lives in Macon, Georgia and is well known by many people. The Special Olympics athlete has participated in many individual sports as well as team sports. Some of the sports Andre has participated in are: sailing, volleyball, basketball, softball, cycling, Alpine Skiing, athletics, powerlifting, and bowling. Andre was a member of Team USA during the 1991 Special Olympics World Summer Games where he competed in powerlifting. He has ridden in BRAG (Bike Ride Across Georgia) for more than five years.
Andre is always a jokester! He is free-spirited and enjoys smiling and having a good time no matter where he is or what he is doing. This year, Andre had to put playing sports on hold due to a hip replacement surgery. When he came to State Fall Games, he didn’t come to play on the softball team; instead, he came to be an assistant coach for the softball team.  Just being involved with sports in any way makes Andre happy! Andre is an All-American Athlete; he is a natural. Andre is our December Athlete of the Month.

Volunteer of the Month: Laura Ogas

Laura has dedicated herself to Special Olympics for many years and it is hard to count the many ways she’s contributed to SOGA.  She serves on the Dalton City/Whitfield County Special Olympics local management team as the volunteer director team member. She recruits, coordinates, recognizes, and manages all the volunteers for their area, and serves as the chairperson for the Area 1 (Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Fannin, Gilmer, Murray, Pickens, Walker, and Whitfield counties) local management team. As the chairperson, she oversees the organization of all of those counties.

And for the past couple of years, Laura has been an integral part of organizing  State Fall Games, which were held for the first time in Dalton in October. Laura’ helped secure, organize, and manage volunteers. And for most of 2011, Laura was spreading the word the community about  Fall Games and helping find more than 1,000 volunteers and helping to raise money for games. For the weekend of the games, Laura was up early and worked late coordinating volunteers and helping SOGA staff, GMT members, and everyone in between with whatever they needed. When issues arose at Games, Laura was one of the first people ready  to fix the issue. The 2011 Fall Games are considered by many to be our best one yet and Laura is one of the biggest reasons.

Thank you Laura for all that you do for Special Olympics Georgia and for your dedication to the Fall Games! You are truly a remarkable person and everyone at SOGA looks forward to the years to come!

You can nominate a Volunteer of the Month by contacting Leslie Anderson at  Leslie.Anderson@SpecialOlympicsGA.org for more information.

 Be an Athlete’s Hero Today

You don’t have to be a professional athlete to be a hero to a Special Olympics athlete. As athletes are an inspiration, you can also be one by becoming a coach and teaching healthy habits or a sport, being there for an athlete at a State Games as a fan and, of course, making a donation. Without scoring a touchdown or pitching a no-hitter on the big screen, you can still help create a level playing field for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Help show that everyone can be a hero and
that everyone can be good when we work together.
