November Volunteers of the Month: Billy Hughey and Todd Ogas
How do you pick just one volunteer when you have two very worthy individuals who played a big role in bringing together Dalton’s very first State Fall Games, who both volunteered long hours, and who made sure that one of the game’s largest events ran smoothly?
Well, this month we won’t; instead we will honor two – Billy Hughey and Todd Ogas. Billy and Todd have been a part of the new Games Management Team for the Fall Games in Dalton.
They solicited sponsors, volunteers, donations, along with volunteering to be the bocce venue directors: Billy headed up unified bocce while Todd took on traditional bocce. Anyone who has seen bocce in action at the Fall Games knows just how massive a sport it is, with 20 bocce courts, over 375 volunteers, over 800 athletes and partners playing, and lasting the entire
weekend. The venue director job is to make sure the venue progresses efficiently and on time, not always an easy task when dealing with competition, rules, volunteers, coaches, but Billy and Todd managed to run the event making it one of the best bocce competitions ever. And they not only had competition run on time but it ended earlier than it ever has before with competition completed by Saturday evening!
Thank you Billy and Todd for all of your support leading up to and at this year’s Fall Games. We look forward to the next two years in Dalton! |

Be an Athlete’s Hero Today
You don’t have to be a professional athlete to be a hero to a Special Olympics athlete. As athletes are an inspiration, you can also be one by becoming a coach and teaching healthy habits or a sport, being there for an athlete at a State Games as a fan and, of course, making a donation. Without scoring a touchdown or pitching a no-hitter on the big screen, you can still help create a level playing field for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Click here to donate today.Help show that everyone can be a hero and
that everyone can be good when we work together.

NEW: Athlete Spotlight
Tyler Hughey has been competing in Special Olympics Georgia since 2001, with his first competition at the State Horse Show in Perry. Since then, Tyler has competed in various sports including aquatics, skiing, sailing, and bocce at various state games around the state. This year, the State Fall Games were held for the first time in Tyler’s hometown of
Dalton, giving him the chance to compete in bocce in front of several of his family and friends. And Tyler even brought home a gold medal in unified bocce competing for the first time with his grandfather.
Tyler and his entire family have been involved with Special
Olympics Georgia’s games in Dalton. His mother, Lisa, is the Fall Games volunteer games director, his father, Billy, has been a part of the GMT helping to solicit sponsors and volunteers and he was also the bocce venue director, and his sister Raven, has continued to be a huge leader in the Y-Lead program. All have done so much in bringing the Fall Games
in Dalton together and it was such a huge success with all of their help.
Tyler said he was proud of the games being in Dalton. “Well it is different from competing in other towns because volunteers from my church and friends from my hometown got to see me compete. It was a feeling hard to describe, probably because I am used to going to
different towns competing in front of strangers and this was better. This was also the first time I got to compete in bocce and with my Grand-Poppa, instead of just playing bocce as a pastime.”
