Protective
Behaviors Training
Special Olympics programs are
required to train all Class A volunteers in protective behaviors.
Class A volunteers have regular, close, physical contact with
athletes; are in a position of authority or supervision with
athletes; are in a position of trust of athletes; and/or handle
substantial amounts of cash or assets of the program. Class A
volunteers are coaches, unified partners, chaperones, overnight
hosts, ALPS speech coaches and trainers, drivers of athletes,
Games Management Team members and possibly board members and
fundraising special event committee members.
The new training material is a
critical tool for protecting Special Olympics athletes from
sexual, physical and emotional abuse.
